The Global Chamber on African Trade, Rights and Economic Development (GCATRED) emerges as a strategic platform designed to position Africa at the heart of global economic and diplomatic engagement.

Rooted in the conviction that Africa’s future depends on inclusive growth, sustainable investment and the protection of rights, GCATRED is dedicated to advancing a transformative agenda that resonates with Africa’s aspirations and the wider global community.

It was founded to serve as a bridge between Africa and the world harnessing the continent’s abundant resources, entrepreneurial spirit, and youthful dynamism while ensuring that development is driven by fairness, equity and accountability.

GCATRED’s mandate extends beyond traditional commerce. It embraces diplomacy, rights-based approaches and strategic partnerships as levers for unlocking Africa’s full potential. By aligning its mission with the African Union’s Agenda 2063, the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), the principles of UNCTAD, the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) and the World Trade Organization (WTO) frameworks, GCATRED reinforces its role as a credible and forward looking institution that advocates for Africa’s rightful place in the global economy.

As a chamber of excellence, GCATRED is committed to promoting fair trade, ethical investment, innovation, climate resilience and human capital development across sectors such as mining, agriculture, technology, energy, tourism, and culture. Its work reflects the continent’s enduring pursuit of prosperity, equity and peace ensuring that Africa’s voice is amplified and respected on the global stage.

INSTITUTIONAL ALIGNMENT NOT ASPIRATION BUT COMMITMENT

GCATRED’s founding documents and strategic plans are explicitly aligned with and actively support:

• African Union Agenda 2063: The Africa We Want particularly Aspirations 1 (A Prosperous Africa), 2 (An Integrated Continent), and 4 (A Peaceful and Secure Africa).

• African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), GCATRED acts as an implementing partner for trade facilitation, SME integration and policy advocacy under the AfCFTA framework.

• UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), GCATRED tracks and reports contributions to SDGs 1, 5, 8, 9, 10, 13, 16 and 17.

• UNCTAD principles, promoting fair, transparent, and inclusive trade practices as outlined in UNCTAD’s mandates.

• WTO Trade Facilitation Agreement, supporting the reduction of non-tariff barriers and modernization of customs across Africa.

These alignments are not listed for prestige. They form the backbone of GCATRED’s Strategic Objectives (2024-2028), are monitored through digital dashboards and will be publicly reported in an Annual Alignment & Impact Report.

FOUNDING PRINCIPLES

The establishment of GCATRED was not a reaction to events, it was a deliberate act of institution building, grounded in six enduring principles:

1. Economic Sovereignty, Africa must own and direct its development trajectory.

2. Inclusive Prosperity, Growth that excludes women, youth, or marginalized communities is incomplete.

3. Rights-Based Development, Trade and investment are means to an end: the full realisation of human, social and economic rights.

4. Pan-African Unity, A fragmented Africa cannot negotiate, trade or lead effectively in the global arena.

5. Global Collaboration, Africa’s prosperity is linked to the world’s, we seek partners, not patrons.

6. Intergenerational Responsibility, We build for the Africa of 2063 and beyond, not for short term gain.

LEGITIMACY AND CREDIBILITY

GCATRED is not an ad-hoc coalition. It is a formally constituted international chamber with:

• A Constitution approved by its founders and governance bodies

• A Code of Conduct and an independent Monitoring, Ethics and Deontology Committee (MEDC)

• A structured membership framework across five categories, spanning individuals to governments

• A subsidiary investment arm, GCATRED Consultancy Ltd, registered and operating from Sierra Leone

• A publicly available Strategic Plan with measurable targets and annual reporting

We understand that trust is earned, not assumed. That is why GCATRED commits to transparency in governance, finance and impact measurement and why we invite scrutiny from members, partners, and the public.

THE AFRICA WE SERVE

Africa is 54 nations, over 1.4 billion people and the world’s largest free trade area by membership. It is home to 60% of the world’s uncultivated arable land, critical minerals essential to the global energy transition, and the youngest population on earth. Yet it receives less than 3% of global foreign direct investment and accounts for only 3% of world trade.

GCATRED exists to change these numbers not through rhetoric but through structured, measurable action in trade facilitation, investment mobilisation and rights protection.

We work with governments to remove trade barriers. We work with investors to deploy capital responsibly. We work with entrepreneurs to build businesses that last. And we work with communities to ensure that prosperity reaches the last mile.

This preamble is not a static historical note. It is a living statement of intent, revisited and reaffirmed by GCATRED’s leadership and membership as the institution grows. It anchors everything we do from the largest continental forum to the smallest community engagement.
